EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) [L'EVENTAIL.] 1900.
50 1/2x33 inches, 128x84 cm. Chaix & G. de Malherbe.
Condition B+: creases and minor abrasions in image; repaired tears at edges, some affecting image. Matted and framed.
For the 1900 Exposition Universelle Grasset designed jewelry, stained glass and tapestries. He was also commissioned to design two decorative panels for the event. "They are his most successful lithographed panels, daring in the boldness of his colors, contrasting blues and greens with orange, yellow and black. The orange-haired woman with the parasol and black shawl in one confronts the black-haired woman with the orange fan in the other. Using the same colors in both he carefully balances them while yet remaining at his freest in his use of line. From a distance, the well defined outlines are clear, there is no muddy blending at the edges; yet seen close to there is an astonishing lack of 'stained glass' leading in the lines, which appear like thick brush strokes, retaining the spontaneity of a sketch" (Arwas p. 85). Murray-Robertson p. 188, Arwas p. 86, Gold 205.
